The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) says it has stepped up operations in and around Johannesburg’s CBD, where students are expected to continue their protests on Monday morning.
Last week, numerous Wits University students took to the streets to protest the non-registration of students who still owe the institution money.
Students from Johannesburg University also took part in the protest.
JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla said, “JMPD officials are on high alert as we expect the students to continue their protests at Braamfontein Precinct, Jhb CBD and Auckland Park. During last week’s protests, we discovered several streets were affected as students marched and picketed. These include Jossion, Yale, and Empire Road. Officials will be in attendance to reroute traffic and reduce congestion. We appeal to the drivers to be careful and patient at this moment. “
Sasco calls for a national closure of the universities:
